  1. MacTrek 1.5 Sound Effects Installer ReadMe

  4. This program installs the digitized sound effects for MacTrek 1.5.
  5.  
  6. To use: Run the installer program. It will put up an "Open" dialog box, showing
  7. only application programs; find your copy of MacTrek 1.5 and open it. (Don't
  8. worry if you accidentally select another application program; the installer
  9. checks to see if you actually selected the MacTrek program, and alerts you if
  10. you didn't.) The installer will show a progress dialog with the names of the
  11. sounds it's installing; when it finishes, the installer program will return to
  12. the Finder.

  14. For the technically minded: The sounds the installer copies are stored as 'snd '
  15. resources in the resource fork of the program. I've given a complete listing of
  16. the sounds, their resource ID's and their resource names. You can use this
  17. information to replace the sounds with ones you recorded yourself, if you have
  18. access to a digitizer and ResEdit. Simply record a sound, save it as a 'snd '
  19. resource, copy it into the resource fork of the installer program, and give it
  20. the same name and resource ID# as the sound you want to replace. NOTE: YOU MUST
  21. MAKE SURE THE BOTH THE NAME AND ID# ARE IDENTICAL. THIS IS HOW MACTREK
  22. RECOGNIZES THE SOUNDS. IF YOU DON'T, THE SOUNDS WILL NOT WORK. Then re-run the
  23. installer program. Your new sounds will replace the old ones.

  25. I hereby give my blessing to those who want to try this, though I advise you to
  26. keep an untouched copy of the installer around in case you want to go back to
  27. the old sounds. I even give permission to distribute your own version of the
  28. sound effects, UNDER THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:

  30. 1. You make it CLEAR in the instructions you distribute with your sound package
  31.    that the sounds came from you. This is to both give you credit where it's
  32.    due and to protect me if someone does something stupid, like releasing a 
  33.    package of obscene sounds or legally protected sounds. In fact, I'd prefer
  34.    you not do this at all ;) but if you must, I hearby disavow any 
  35.    responsibility.

  37. 2. You must use a copy of this installer to distribute the sounds. This is to
  38.    make things easy on the user.
  39.  
  40. 3. You may NOT -- repeat, may NOT -- distribute a copy of the MacTrek program
  41.    with your sounds installed. Any copies of MacTrek you distribute must be
  42.    the "clean", unaltered copy I originally uploaded to the online services.
